Advantages of THHN Wire

  • High Heat Resistance: THHN wire is UL-listed, having a temperature rating of up to 90°C in dry locations, which suits many industrial environments. For instance, it’s applicable to the interior of electrical cabinets, where the temperature easily rises due to continuous equipment operation, and to industrial baking rooms and other high-temperature production workshops, capable of withstanding brief heat overloads.

  • Durable Insulation: Its insulation consists of PVC and an outer Nylon Jacket. The PVC insulates electricity, while nylon, a tough material, endows the wire with abrasion, chemical, and oil resistance. Tests show nylon-sheathed THHN outlasts standard PVC-Insulated Wires by twice, lasting over 40 years. It resists damage from gasoline, grease, and common industrial solvents, prolonging lifespan in harsh settings.

  • Versatility: It is a Building Wire applicable to most electrical codes, rated up to 600 volts, covering the power needs of common household and industrial equipment. THHN, allowed in dry and damp locations, suits various scenarios like residential lighting, commercial building power, and industrial machine control circuits.

  • Easy Handling: Nylon, having self-lubricating properties, enables THHN to slide in conduits or raceways, reducing installer effort and friction that might harm insulation. This boosts efficiency in large-scale projects with many wires in conduits, and lessens abrasion between wires.

  • Wide Gauge Range: The conductor can be solid or stranded. Stranded Conductors are used for gauges above 10, and solid for 14-10 Gauges, available in 1.6-3.2 mm solid, and 2.0-500 mm² stranded options. This variety enables selection based on current load and space, for uses from low-power home appliances to heavy industrial equipment.

  • Lightweight and Compact: Compared with other wires of the same ampacity, the THHN wire, due to its Nylon Sheath, features a smaller outer diameter and lighter weight, facilitating transportation, storage, and reducing building load when a large number of wires are used, with enhanced installation convenience.

Disadvantages of THHN Wire

  • Not for Wet Locations: THHN wire requires extra waterproofing if used outdoors or underground. Although it can be used in damp areas, it can't be submerged, like in water pipes, sewers, or underwater power systems, as moisture may penetrate insulation over time, triggering short circuits or electric shocks.

  • Temperature Limitation in Damp Areas: Its damp-area rating is 75°C, not suitable for sustained high temperatures. In hot, humid environments, like tropical factories or coastal high-temperature workshops, this limitation might force choosing wires rated 90°C for wet conditions to avoid insulation breakdown from overheating.

  • Dependence on Conduit: THHN wire, lacking rugged external protection, must be in conduits or raceways, not for direct burial. Conduit boosts costs, needs more space, and complicates installation, with extra time for cutting, fixing, etc. Also, curved or narrow areas make threading conduits arduous.

  • Nylon Jacket Vulnerability: Despite being durable, the nylon jacket might soften or crack in > 90°C dry conditions or contact strong solvents (e.g., some industrial cleaners), losing protection. THHN's PVC Insulation under nylon is thinner than other wires, so nylon damage might quickly threaten electrical safety.

  • Not UV Resistant: Without anti-UV features, sunlight exposure ages nylon and PVC, making them brittle and crack-prone, shortening wire lifespan. Hence, THHN isn't suited to unshielded outdoor setups like open-air power distribution for outdoor billboards, unless paired with UV-blocking conduits or protective materials.

  • Toxic Gas Release When Burned: Its thermoplastic sheath emits harmful gases when burning, endangering people and the environment, thus needing strict fire precautions. In enclosed spaces, like basements or small machine rooms, ventilation and fireproofing must meet higher standards.
